What to Know Before You Start Wedding Dress Shopping

What to Know Before You Start Wedding Dress Shopping

Wedding dress shopping is a whole experience - and if you’re diving in for the first time, there’s a good chance you’re about to learn a lot very quickly. At Modern on Market, we’re here to make the process fun, empowering, and totally stress-free. So let’s go over a few things most brides don’t realize before they start shopping. (Trust us - knowing this ahead of time is a game-changer.)

Bridal Sizing Is Different
Here’s the truth: bridal sizing does not follow typical street sizes. You might wear a size 6 in everyday clothes but find yourself trying on a size 10 or 12 in bridal. It’s not you - it’s the system. Sizing runs small across most designers, so don’t let the number on the tag mess with your head. What matters is how you feel in the dress, not the number stitched into it.

You Might Cry, or You Might Not
TV shows love a good “yes moment” with tears and dramatic music. And while that totally happens, it’s just as normal to find your dress and not cry at all. Some brides feel chills, some feel giddy, and others just quietly know: “This is the one.” Every reaction is valid. Go with your gut, not the dramatics.

Silhouettes Make a Big Difference
Don’t worry if you don’t know the difference between an A-line and a mermaid - we’ll teach you! But understanding how silhouettes work can help you narrow things down.

A-line: Fitted at the top, flares gradually - great on everyone.

Ballgown: Fitted bodice, full skirt - classic and romantic.

Fit-and-flare/Trumpet: Hugs your body through the hips, then flares - flattering and sultry.

Sheath/Column: Straight, minimal, often modern and sleek.

Mermaid: Fitted all the way to the knees, then dramatically flared - hello, drama!

Trying these on is the best way to see what works for your body and vibe.

The First Dress Could Be It
You don’t have to try on 50 gowns to “earn” your dream dress. Sometimes it’s the first one. And sometimes it’s one you almost didn’t try on. Be open! Your stylist might suggest a wild card you never imagined - and it could totally wow you.

Alterations Are Normal
Unless you’re magic, your gown won’t fit perfectly off the rack. Alterations are a built-in part of the process. You might need a hem, a strap adjustment, or a nip at the waist. Plan for them (and budget for them), and don’t panic if your dress doesn’t fit like a glove on day one - it will!

Undergarments Matter More Than You’d Think
The right undergarments can totally change the way a dress fits and feels. If you're planning on wearing shapewear, a particular bra, or no bra at all, bring that with you! And for those sleek, backless gowns? That’s where our favorite game-changer comes in…
